What is the talk mode on AirPods and how to use it?

Along with the new iOS 15 and macOS 12 Monterey updates at WWDC 2021, Apple also announced several updates for AirPods to make them more useful for users. One of the great new AirPods features announced at WWDC 2021 is called Conversation Boost, and it makes it easier for AirPods users to hear how they are being talked to. Now, if you’re interested in testing it, here’s what Conversation Boost is on AirPods and how to use it.

Increasing the speed of conversation on AirPods: an explanation (2021)

In this article, we not only explained what the new Conversation Boost feature is, but also described in detail how to enable it, compatible devices and much more. So, use the table below to navigate between the relevant sections.

What is the talk mode on AirPods?

So first, what is Conversation Boost in AirPods? Now you should know that AirPods Pro supports active noise reduction, and there is a great transparency mode that you can use to listen to the sounds around you. If you don’t know about it, here’s how to switch between ANC and transparency modes in AirPods Pro. It’s also not bad for being able to talk to other people while you’re listening to music on AirPods Pro.

However, some people, especially people with hearing impairments, may find it difficult to talk to others in the transparency mode of AirPods Pro. Conversation Boost is designed to solve this problem.

Essentially, when you turn on conversation amplification on AirPods Pro, AirPods will use their beam-forming microphones to focus on the person speaking in front of you and amplify their voice in your ears. This way you will be able to hear them correctly even if you wear AirPods Pro.

It’s pretty cool, and it’s definitely a useful feature that I’ll use a lot when we get back to the office after the lockdown.

How to use talk mode on AirPods

Now that you know what Conversation Boost does, let’s see how to enable it in AirPods Pro. Just follow the instructions below:

  • After connecting the AirPods Pro to the iPhone, open the Control Center. You can access the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen. Here, press and hold the volume slider to open the AirPods Pro settings.
  • You can enable the ‘Conversation Amplification’ function here with one touch and adjust the noise reduction using the slider.

As soon as you turn on the conversation amplification function, your Pro headphones will focus on the person who is speaking in front of you, and you will be able to hear him better. Pretty cool, right?

Which AirPods are compatible with the Conversation Boost feature?

By now, you should be wondering which AirPods support this feature. If you have questions like ‘Can I use conversation enhancement with AirPods or AirPods Max?’ Unfortunately, no. Apple has introduced this new feature only for AirPods Pro.

This means that first-generation AirPods, second-generation AirPods, and AirPods Max cannot use Conversation Boost. This is a bit surprising because all AirPods come with beam-forming microphones, but Apple has decided to allow only the Pro option to use the conversation amplification feature.

Listen to others with ease using the conversation function

As you probably already know, Conversation Boost is a new useful feature of AirPods, available to users upgrading their iPhone to iOS 15. But Conversation Boost isn’t all that new in iOS 15. There are several useful features, such as creating FaceTime calls between iPhone and Android, blurring the background when making FaceTime calls in iOS 15, and much more. So, what do you think about the conversation enhancement feature in AirPods Pro? Will you use it? Let us know in the comments.
