What Facebook Lite is and can it replace Facebook?

What is Facebook Lite? In a nutshell, this is a stripped-down version of the standard Facebook app for Android and iOS. Although it lacks certain features, it is still a great alternative to the full-size Facebook app.

However, as we all know, Facebook knows a lot of information about you, and the social network’s mobile app is one of the ways the company collects your data. Is the Facebook Lite app better?

Facebook Lite is a free app. In this article, we will explain what Facebook Lite is and help you decide if it can replace the standard Facebook app.

What is Facebook Lite?

Facebook introduced Facebook Lite in 2015 as a version of Facebook created from scratch to work smoothly with poor mobile connections and inexpensive phones.

This application is for the whole world, but it is created for developing countries in which it is difficult to establish a connection between data. Facebook Lite also helps to save space on your phone, and still works in 2G conditions.

Advantages of Facebook Lite

Facebook Lite’s main difference from Facebook is its size. Facebook Lite download is less than 10 MB. On my device, it takes up only 2.19 MB. Compare this with the amount of space that a regular Facebook takes up, which is 167 MB. This is a significant difference.

Also Facebook Lite doesn’t upload photos the way Facebook does. This means a slightly longer loading time when scrolling through the news feed, but less data consumed. You will also notice that videos do not play automatically, as in the standard application, videos will only play in Facebook Lite when connected to Wi-Fi.

You can save even more data by going to Facebook Lite settings and scrolling down to Media and contacts

User interface

Facebook Lite is not just a shell for a mobile site, it is a completely redesigned application. Honestly, the location is no worse, it’s just different. You still have the same basic tabs: news feed, friend requests, messages, videos, notifications and options you just can’t navigate between them, you have to touch them.

Facebook Lite on the left and the original Facebook app on the right are compared to the news feed of both apps:

. . . .

Facebook Lite menu and search bar remain at the top of the screen, and the standard Facebook app places the menu bar at the bottom. In Facebook Lite, you will see smaller text and buttons that are designed for devices with low-resolution screens. It still looks like a modern with white cards on a gray background, just like in a regular Facebook app.

In the notification bar below, you can see that the Lite version has small low-resolution profile photos to indicate if someone liked or commented on something. The text is also much smaller compared to the original Facebook app.

. . . .

Scrolling in the Lite app is a bit slower than in a regular Facebook. It is clear that Facebook has made some cuts so that the application can work normally on devices with low RAM, low CPU power consumption and poor internet connection. Despite this, Facebook Lite can still be used.

Security and privacy

Facebook definitely loves your information, and you want to be sure that the company doesn’t just give it away to everyone. For starters, Facebook has an online tool that allows you to check your privacy settings, but once you do that, it’s a good idea to see what permissions the mobile app has on your device.

You can even browse Facebook via Tor for extra security.

Some people find the permissions of a regular Facebook app a bit invasive. You can see it all below.

It looks like a long list, but the Facebook Lite list is almost as long:

The main differences? A regular Facebook has permissions to use biometric equipment, change sound settings, use Google Play billing services and connect to your Bluetooth devices. So nothing special.

Facebook’s usual permissions are basically too aggressive for you, then Facebook Lite probably is too. It’s best to avoid permissions just to access the Facebook mobile website through your favorite Android browser.

Facebook Lite had its own messaging system built right into the app. However, it now forces you to download and use a separate messaging app, just like the standard Facebook app. Instead of using the usual Messenger, Facebook Lite users are recommended to use Messenger Lite in Android and iOS,

But if you’re going to switch, how does Messenger Lite compare to Messenger? Look at yourself. Messenger Lite is at the bottom left, and Messenger is at the bottom right.

. . . .

Facebook Messenger Lite looks almost the same as a regular Messenger. If you think Messenger is too bloated, Lite might just be the messaging app you’ve been looking for.

And if you are a fan of Facebook stickers, you will be glad to know that even the Lite version supports them. Just remember that you won’t have access to the library of GIFs, emoticons, and text styles that come with standard Messenger. It’s functional, but not very.

How can I download Facebook Lite?

Facebook Lite is currently available in North America, as well as in parts of Asia, South America, Africa and Europe. The Play Store and App Store lists are visible to everyone, but if you are not in one of the supported countries, you will see a message: ‘This app is not compatible with all your devices’.

Facebook vs Facebook Lite: What should you use?

While Facebook isn’t a cup of tea for everyone, Facebook Lite may be more appealing. Especially if you have an old phone or you need to save data where possible.

However, if you don’t have an old phone and don’t need to save data, you’ll probably get more use from the standard Facebook app. The only problem is the additional permissions required to use it.

Although Facebook Messenger provides an easy way to communicate with friends, you may not want to post information to Facebook. Fortunately, these are alternatives to Facebook Messenger

ideal if you don’t want to use Facebook.
