How to use the Voice recording app in Windows 10

If you’re looking for a simple solution to record audio, Windows 10 has the right tool: a voice recorder.

If your job or hobby requires you to create an audio recording, you can use this free tool for Windows 10. The voice recorder is a simple solution that allows you to record, edit, mark the relevant parts and share your recordings.

How to record audio using a voice recorder

  1. In the search bar of the Start menu, type voice recorder and select ‘Best Match’.

  2. To start recording, click the ‘Record’ button. You can also start recording by pressing Ctrl R.

  3. Press the ‘Pause’ button if you want to interrupt the recording without ending the session. So you will have one audio file.

  4. To end the recording session, press the ‘Stop’ button. Alternatively, you can stop recording by pressing Esc, Backspace, or Space.

Please note that if you are using an older version of Windows 10, you may have to download the app from the Microsoft Store.

If you close the recorder window while recording, you will receive a notification that recording has been paused. However, if you use Focus Assist to disable notifications, Windows 10 will not display any notifications about the progress of your recording.

After you stop recording, Windows 10 will automatically save the audio file in .m4a format. You can find the file in the ‘Sound Recordings’ folder in the ‘Documents’ folder.

How to listen to your recordings

  1. In the search bar of the Start menu, type voice recorder and select ‘Best Match’.

  2. Select the track you want to listen to from the menu displayed on the left side of the window.

  3. Use the slider and the ‘Pause/Play’ button.

How to add markers

Markers allow you to identify important parts of your record, facilitating the editing process. To add a marker, click the ‘Add Marker’ button or press Ctrl M. The marker is displayed as a checkbox and indicates how much time has passed since the recording started.

In addition, you can add markers while listening to one of your recordings. Adding a marker does not interrupt or affect the recording. If you want to delete one of the markers, right-click it and select Delete this marker.

How to edit an audio recording using a voice recorder

If you want it to be simple, you can use a Voice Recorder to crop your recordings and save only the useful parts.

  1. In the search bar of the Start menu, type voice recorder and select ‘Best Match’.

  2. Select the audio recording you want to edit from the list.

  3. Click the ‘Crop’ button. This will display two contacts.

  4. Move the pins along the strip to select the part you want to save.

  5. Click the ‘Play’ button to avoid accidentally deleting important details.

  6. When the recording is finished cropping, click the ‘Save’ button.

There are two options: Save a copy and update the original. If you think that the audio recording still needs to be finalized, it is better to use the Save a copy option. Updating the original version will permanently delete the cropped audio.

Windows 10 will automatically name the audio recordings, add the time and date, as well as the length of each recording. While this is definitely useful information, it may not be enough.

If you need a large number of audio recordings for your projects, the default names can be confusing. A more effective way to identify audio recordings is to name the files yourself. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Voice Recorder app.

  2. Select the entry you want to rename from the menu.

  3. Click Rename.

  4. Enter a name that will give you enough information about the record.

  5. Click Rename.

How to share an audio recording

  1. Open the Voice Recorder app

  2. Select the audio recording you want to share.

  3. Click the Share button.

  4. Select the application you want to use to share the recording.

If you are sharing a recording with someone in the same room as you, the fastest way may be to share it using the ‘Share near you’ feature.

How to fix Microsoft Voice Recorder

The first time you use the voice recorder, Windows 10 will ask you to set up the microphone in the settings. You must allow the application to access your microphone, otherwise the recorder will not have an audio input.

This is how you allow the recorder access to your microphone.

  1. Right-click the Start menu and select Settings.

  2. Select Privacy.

  3. In the list of app permissions, select Microphone.

  4. In the Allow applications to access the microphone section, turn on the switch.

  5. Scroll down to select which Microsoft Store apps can access your microphone.

  6. Make sure that the switch for the recorder is on.

Run the troubleshooting tool for your microphone

Before trying more complicated solutions like reinstalling or updating drivers, try this quick fix. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Right-click Start.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. In the Update and Security menu, select Troubleshooting.

  4. Click Advanced Troubleshooting Tools.

  5. In the ‘Find and fix other problems’ section, select the ‘Audio Recording’ option.

  6. Select Run the Troubleshooter.

  7. In the new window, select the microphone you want to fix.

  8. Click Next.

If your microphone is still not working, make sure that the microphone is properly connected to your device. If you are using a USB microphone, connect it to another USB port or USB cable.

If you have connected the microphone via Bluetooth and it does not work properly, follow this checklist:

  • Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your device. Open the Support Center and check if Bluetooth is enabled.

  • Make sure that the microphone does not need to be charged.

  • Make sure you are in the operating range. You can connect your devices via Bluetooth only if they are 20 to 30 feet apart. In addition, obstacles such as walls will interfere with the connection.

  • Make sure that you are not already sending a large amount of data via Bluetooth. Sending files via the ‘Sharing’ function or via the Bluetooth speaker will affect the Bluetooth connection.
