Xbox One S Review: White, thin, with 4K support and absolutely meaningless

Three generations of Xbox: Xbox 360 (left), Xbox One With (center) and Xbox One (right)

But, unlike Sony with its PlayStation 4, in the case of Microsoft, it always seemed, that the company plans Xbox One as a gateway for its software and services, designed for the living room. And it doesn’t matter, whether to position this system as a universal media box or as the best platform for exclusive console games. In any case, the company has closely integrated this device into the Windows ecosystem. In the Windows 8 era, Microsoft introduced the app, which allows you to control the console from a computer. With the advent of Windows 10 , such tempting functions began to be attached to it, how to stream video from Xbox One to PC, as well as a number of other features, which are just getting ready to launch.

Microsoft has released an August update for Xbox One - and some may call it an analogue of Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and the Xbox One S will be the first model, which will be able to demonstrate support for new media. Yes, this slim Xbox One console looks attractive, but the fact of reducing its size by 40% is not its main advantage. Compactness is, of course, important, but not so important, as the ability to transfer 4K content to the TV screen.

4K: the reason to buy Xbox One S

After 3D TVs stopped attracting so much attention, Manufacturers have begun to offer consumers the following eye-visible advantage: ultra-high definition 4K (UHD). And to make them even more attractive, they brought the latest TVs to a new level of quality and demonstrated a wide dynamic range (HDR).

And if the benefits of HDR are difficult to assess, until another TV appears in front of you, but without HDR, then the benefits of using 4K are visible to the naked eye. Additional resolution gives a sense of reality, which is still missing in 1080p. In addition, there is more and more content in 4K format, which is another argument for acquisition. Now it’s not just about content from Netflix and videos from YouTube - you can buy a movie on a 4K Blu-ray disc.

Thus, support for 4K Blue-ray discs, as well as streaming video in 4K and HDR formats allows you to reduce the cost of a multimedia system - in the same way, as in the case of Sony PlayStation 3 in 2006 (By the way, Sony has announced its plans to create a PlayStation 4 console with 4K and HDR support, but he does not name the price and release date yet.) However, the fact remains, and 4K content looks great on the screen, Whether it’s streaming from Amazon or Netflix, recordings from YouTube or playback from 4K HDR Blu-ray discs.

A scene from the 4K version of the Star Trek movie looks great, due to the quality of the media, and also Xbox One S

However, the wow factor level depends on, what you will be watching. Microsoft offers recording of the 2009 Star Trek movie in 4K Blu-ray format, but, in our opinion, the brown-orange palette of the film does not show such striking differences. Besides, that the drawing has become clearer and more detailed. Netflix and YouTube offer much more impressive videos, this is especially true for vivid recordings of wildlife, which TV manufacturers use to, to showcase your new products.

By the way, S will support games with HDR. But the first copies of this family, such as Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and Scalebound, they will appear only in a few months.

Mike Ibarra from Microsoft also said, that One S will improve video in games to 4K resolution. But if it is, we didn’t see any obvious signs of this possibility in One S. Even on a 4K HDR display, which was used to test the console in the PC World lab, no difference was noticed. Keep in mind, that the ‘upscaling’ technology only does pixel interpolation, which is very different from in-game video processing and texture demonstration, specially designed for 4K resolution.

Suitable for the living room

Unlike the original Xbox One, The One S model really looks like a media box, which will perfectly fit into the already created interior of the living room. Its width (or height, if the console is installed vertically) is 29.5 cm, depth - 22.8 cm and thickness - 5.1 cm, while the original Xbox One has a width of 33 cm and a depth of 28 cm.

In addition to that, that the new version of the console has 40% less volume (as we reported earlier), it has another bonus: a massive power supply is already built into the case. This very nice addition makes a lot of One S, a component of 2.98 kg, about 0.7 kg less, than the original Xbox One, which is even more impressive.

The Xbox One S model has a third USB located on the front panel

Cooling becomes a priority. Ribbed front panel, it seems, devoid of ventilation holes. But even if you put the prefix horizontally, on top and on the sides there will be enough small holes with a diameter of spaghetti, complementing the large cutouts in the case. And although it is assumed, that there is a second grid inside, which protects the components, interesting, how much cat hair and other debris will accumulate inside One S during the use of the console. However, in its pure state, the One S remains cold to the touch even without much fan noise., when working in an apartment with air conditioning or in an office with good ventilation.

Microsoft has adapted One S to work both in an upright position, so it is in the horizontal. Low profile stand, which is supplied for free with a version with 2 TB, they are tightly put on one side of the console - for this, two plastic tabs are simply inserted into small slots. With the attached stand, the Xbox One can be positioned vertically. She won’t fall, even if you push her a little, but it is unlikely to withstand an accidental blow with the paw of a disgruntled cat.

As for the fit of the base in the Xbox One S, that, once securing it, you get an almost perpetual console fixing system. In particular, one of our editors was deeply disappointed, when he realized, that its entertainment center was created for the generation of horizontal DVD players and video players, and not for aesthetic vases and cable modems. Microsoft explains, that the stand is removable, but disconnecting it is not for the faint of heart. It is attached very securely, so it’s better to think about it in advance, where and how to place the console. Also, the stand covers the entire side of the console, but the cooling system, must be, takes this into account. We played Forza Motorsport 6 and Grand Theft Auto 5 for over an hour, and even with the stand, the console remained cool to the touch. By the way, we never heard, how her fan works.

The back side of the Xbox One S

There are two HDMI ports on the back of the One S: one for output, the other is for entering from the TV, as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports, SPDIF, LAN interface and IR port. On the front panel are the third, unmarked USB port for USB drives, button for synchronization with the controller, IR receiver, power on button, and also a button for extracting game discs. One S does not have a dedicated port for Kinect. And those, who already has Kinect, when replacing the original Xbox, you can order a free USB adapter to connect it. (Microsoft did not provide us with an adapter for review, so we can’t say, how well it works).

The Xbox One controller (left) and the new Xbox One S controller (right)

Apart from changing the color scheme - from black to white with black inserts, Only very subtle changes distinguish the standard Xbox One controller from the Xbox One S controller. Here we mean the textured back panel, which is better in the hands, even if they are wet, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the front panel, which makes it easy to connect a headset or headphones. The new One S controller supports Bluetooth, and it can also work together with a PC and Windows 10 without an extra adapter or cable.

The fine texture on the white One S controller helps it not to slip in wet palms

Otherwise, both controllers are almost identical, walking model for One S and looks a little more flattened on the sides, perhaps, making this even smaller the reduced size of the One S. itself. Side buttons, which are less prominent and noticeably thinner, than the original Xbox, they no longer provide the same amount of space for game movements.

The interface is faster… it seems to be faster

Gamers, as a rule, pay special attention to the frame rate, the quality of visualization and the power of the graphics subsystem, which are available on their console. However, one of the disadvantages of the original Xbox One is another parameter - a long loading time. Currently, our model requires as much as 1 min and 20 s just to load the main user interface and 1 min 47 s before all standard notifications disappear (for example, ‘the external drive is ready’). What do, One S coped in just 45 seconds.

However, if we compare the results obtained with those provided by the standard Surface Pro 4 based on Windows 10 Anniversary Update, then 45 seconds will also seem like an eternity. On SP4, loading takes from 20 seconds in the case of a cold start and 3 seconds when exiting the sleep state. Obviously, that there are a lot of prospects for improvement here. But then, that you cannot (officially) replace the internal hard drive with a solid-state drive indicates that, that its performance is still a weak point. And even if you decide to do it, switching to SSD will significantly increase the price of the console, simultaneously reducing the amount of storage, except for that case, when you have enough money, to buy a 2 TB SSD.

Another problem is that, what is the user interface itself, it seems, they take time to ‘warm up’. The first time, when you try to open the left sidebar of the interface, the system kind of ‘freezes’ for a second or two. Moving between the menu sections using the side buttons occurs at a satisfactory speed, although every time it seems, that One S did not recognize the button press.

And when you move through each individual panel, there are other minor irritating factors. They stem from the legacy design of the user interface: when the Xbox One first appeared, the console was positioned as an entertainment device for the living room. For example, You can view interesting moments from NBA games in a window with a list of OneGuide applications. And it interferes with that, that switching is too slow, because it is designed for voice commands - as from a headset, so it is through the Kinect sector, which they were originally designed for.

In some countries, the Xbox One S may be your interactive TV guide. When watching certain series, you can see, what people say about them on Twitter. After all, is it bad to find out, what do people think, who are watching the final episode of Game of Thrones or some other hit at the same time as you

Advantages of working with Windows 10

With the advent of Windows 10 and cloud services, Microsoft is discussing Xbox One S as a separate console, eg, like the Nintendo Wii U, it becomes a clear simplification. As part of the Windows 10 ecosystem, The Xbox One S device (like the original Xbox One) can use such applications, like the Microsoft Edge browser. It is also capable of running external applications, in particular, Netflix.

Besides, Windows 10 has built-in features for integration with Xbox. The Anniversary Update carries the following improvements, how to get higher frame rates (up to 60 fps) when recording games on a Windows 10 PC, cross-platform access to Xbox Play Anywhere games, as well as special gaming centers for PCs.

Cortana’s voice assistant also works on Xbox One S, but here it is somewhat less useful, than on a PC

Cortana is officially presented on Xbox One and One S for the first time (as a way of transmitting voice commands through a headset). In many ways Cortana just replaces the usual ‘Xbox’ commands, [do it]’, for example, to switch to the TV broadcast window during the game. In certain situations, she is also quite slow to react, but on the other hand, the Microsoft hardware platform, if properly configured, will be able to clearly recognize voice commands even in a rather noisy environment. For owners of the original Xbox One console, disappointed by the lack of a sufficiently clear Kinect response to voice commands, a software update has been released, which may guarantee some improvement in the situation.

But these updates also accompany certain performance issues. In particular, as our experience with streaming video from the game has shown (which allows Windows 10 PC users to remotely control and play games on their Xbox One), it turned out to be much less effective on One S, than on the original console.

Although we have completely restored all the previous settings, Still, the Xbox One S was an order of magnitude slower and its performance level remained unsatisfactory. Once we managed to connect Windows 10 Anniversary Update to One S and play Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 2 with average settings. There were only a few random outages, but the next day, the computer couldn’t even find One S on the network.

Fortunately, everything went more successfully in such games, like the older ‘Witcher 3′, streaming video from which, probably, created less load on the connection. So with streaming, a lot depends on the game itself, network quality and bandwidth, and also from many other factors. In general, from our point of view, the result was not so good.

At the same time, the wireless connection between the controller and the Xbox One S was excellent. And although the controller is easy to connect to a computer via Bluetooth (you just need to press the Pair button on the controller), perhaps, as in our case, you will get a console connection first. It is not excluded, that this played a major role in the emergence of our problems with streaming video. since we were never able to set up the game on a PC with a controller connected to it.

Yes, Xbox One S copes with games just fine

No matter what, We haven’t forgotten yet, that Xbox is a game console. Possible, do you like to play different games on the console (Halo, at last, it has yet to be released on PC), or maybe, want to play more often and faster. If so, you can rest easy, after all, One S provides almost the same gaming experience, just like the Xbox One.

There are slight differences, related to hardware improvements. In particular, in the initial version, the Xbox One S is equipped with a capacious disk of 2 TB, which allows you to store games locally and run them quickly. (At the same time, a cheap external USB hard drive, connected to the original Xbox One, provides an equivalent amount of storage with acceptable performance). Games, which use the capabilities of HDR, also on the way - we mean Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3, but they will appear on the market, perhaps, in a few months.

Besides, One S should scale games to 4K resolution, but we never saw any signs of that, that this is actually happening. We connected the Xbox One and One S to different HDMI ports on the same 4K display, and then they played the same games, to understand the difference. For those games, which we launched, both consoles gave the same result in terms of picture quality, however, we also didn’t notice any differences in the frame rate.

(By the way, the Eurogamer report noted, that the One S frequency is 7% higher, than in One - 914 MHz vs 853 MHz, which leads to a slight increase in frequency - from 2 to 5 fps in some games and under certain conditions. Again, we didn’t notice the difference between the two consoles in frame rate.)

‘The zoom quality will vary depending on the game or application’, - Microsoft responded, when we asked, what explains the results we have obtained. Therefore, the effect of this function will depend on, how good and large-scale its support will be in the future.

Is it worth buying this console?

From our point of view, The released One S is something, similar to a modified American car for the European market. Various new functions have appeared in the device, which will help to interest a new audience.

PC Lovers, who already have an Xbox One console, and those, who does not plan to buy a 4K TV, we would advise not to spend money and wait for Project Scorpio, which will be published in 18 months. By then, 4K TVs should be more advanced and cheaper, and before that, you can play any console exclusives, which also run on Xbox One.

However, if you have already invested in 4K hardware and want to either play the new Halo, or get a more versatile 4K Blu-ray player, then why not? The One S continues Microsoft’s concept and is an improved universal device, which got the opportunity to work with 4K generation displays.
