We diagnose and eliminate emergency failures of the operating system

Diagnosis is difficult, if emergency failures of the operating system occur only from time to time. Possible reasons may be insufficient cooling level, hardware failures or software problems.

1 Operating system failure under excessive load

The computer constantly freezes when the CPU load is high? Then the first suspicion falls on the cooling system. To start, check, are the CPU fans really spinning, graphics card and power supply/enclosure while the computer is running. If this does not happen despite the correct connection and correct BIOS Setup settings, fans, most likely, out of order, and they need to be replaced. If the CPU fan blades are covered with dust, holding the fan firmly, clean it with a vacuum cleaner.

2 An emergency failure is caused by certain actions

If certain actions cause the operating system to crash, for example, connecting or activating hardware, then the problem lies precisely in him. Update all software and drivers, which may be related to this problem, - for example, in the case of a video editing program, the program itself, as well as video card drivers, which are responsible for video output. If problems occur only after updating the drivers, right-click on the device in the device manager and then select ‘Properties Driver Roll back’. If the problems are caused by peripherals, then check them on other ports of your computer or on another machine.

Testing memory modules using Memtest86. The program can be downloaded from a USB drive, after that, it will perform an automatic memory check. The program will help you figure out failed boot processes.

3 The crash occurs when the program is started

Even one unstable program can cause a lot of problems. The first logical step is to check for updates. If you are already on the manufacturer’s website, check the system requirements for the software at the same time. If the operation of this software depends on the runtime environment, for example, Java or .NET, then it also needs to be updated. If these actions do not bring results, define, where are the settings stored, add-ons, etc. of a stubborn program. For example, in the case of Mozilla Firefox , they are in the folder ‘C:Users (Windows user name)App DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles’. Exit Firefox and rename the folder, adding something like ‘_old’ to her name. After that, Firefox will create a new folder and start with factory settings.

If it doesn’t help, in the ‘Control Panel’ menu Programs and components’ right-click on the name of the software, then click on ‘Restore’ or ‘Delete/Change’ and select restore or uninstall the program.

4 Accidental emergency failures

If there is no systematic pattern in the emergency failures, the task of detecting a malfunction becomes somewhat more difficult. One of the suspects in this case is RAM, the operation of which can be disrupted only in certain cases. Boot up your computer, using a flash drive with the Memtest86 program. The test of RAM modules will start automatically and will take some time depending on the system. If the program outputs errors at the end, try again with each individual memory module, to determine, which one of them is faulty, and replace it.
