How to disable Windows 10 update: the most effective ways

Tired of long updates, arising at the most inopportune moment? We turn off automatic updates and sleep peacefully.

Disabling the Windows 10 update has become much more difficult, than in previous versions of the system: Microsoft developers release new patches, forbidding to leave the OS in an outdated state. Let ’s analyze several ways, allowing you to disable intrusive updates. At the end of the video guide, in which you can see the entire sequence of actions.

Service Manager

First, what you need to start with is a complete shutdown of the system service and reconfiguring the rules for its autorun. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. ClickWin Rservices.msc.
  2. Find the ‘Windows Update Center’ service in the list
  3. On the‘General’ tab‘Startup type’‘Disabled’‘Stop’
  4. On the tab’Login to the system’‘With account’‘Overview’
  5. In the next window, click ‘Advanced’ ‘Search’‘Guest’‘OK’
  6. Remove the password for the user‘Guest’‘Login to the system’

What we did: completely stopped the Windows Update Center and configured its launch in this way, so that after a reboot it runs as a user without administrator rights (Guest). Even if the update service turns back on with the new patch, it won’t affect anything. Since updates in the system can only be installed on behalf of the administrator, Windows 10 can no longer download and install them - this is prohibited by the system security policy itself.

  • Programs and applications

A cursory review shows, that this way to disable the Windows 10 update currently works for most users-both at the local computer level, so it is at the level of entire organizations. But don’t worry, if the ‘ten’ continues to roll updates. There are other effective methods.

Local Group Policy Editor

In Windows, you can access the configuration of certain functionality using various tools. Not only the service manager can control the launch of updates. The Local Group Policy Editor is a deeper utility. You can use its services, by doing the following:

  1. Press the key combinationWin Rgpedit.msc
  2. Then follow the address: Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/
  3. Click on the category ‘Windows Update’ Disabled

But this method will not help in every case. Because of, that developers are constantly coming up with new methods of intrusive automatic updates, it is worth turning off Updater everywhere, wherever possible. Therefore, use all the tools, described in this article.

Task Scheduler

If you are wondering: ‘why do some actions occur in the system regularly, Even though I’m not doing anything?’, that, most likely, the culprit is the task scheduler. Many system processes, as well as third-party utilities run automatically under certain conditions (they are also called triggers). For example, because of this, some programs are often run at the start of the system, although everything is clean in the startup. Scheduler is a deeper tool. It should be checked regularly. So, to disable system updates, follow these steps:

  1. Press the key combinationWin Rtaskschd.msc
  2. Follow the address: Task scheduler libraryMicrosoftWindowsUpdateOrchestrator
  3. Disable all tasks, related to updates. They are called differently in different versions of Windows. Most often it’s something like Update AssistantUpdate Assistant CalendarRun
  • Operation

Usually all the above manipulations are enough to forget about annoying updates. But if nothing helped, you can resort to heavy artillery third-party software. However, you should use this method only as a last resort, because it is quite difficult to return the settings to their original state. And conflicts often arise, related to other system processes.

Third-party software

It is easy to find programs on the Internet, designed to disable updates. We recommend using utilities like DWS (Destroy Windows Spying). This is free software, does not require installation. He knows not only how to deal with updates, its functionality is quite large. For example, you can remove most of the unnecessary standard applications: Voice recorder, Phone companion, Film TV and so on. You can disable the telemetry and Windows Defender processes.

If the program did not fit in a couple of clicks, you can find an analog in the open spaces of the Internet. Don’t forget to create a restore point before using. And also from time to time, return to updates in manual mode. Still, they are sometimes needed.

And now the promised video instruction.
